Today, I’d like to share how to easily convert a PDF to PNG format so you can utilize the Print Then Cut feature with Cricut Design Space. I am no expert on Cricut® Design Space, but I have used my Cricut® for quite a few projects since receiving it as a Christmas gift a year ago. The Zing come with MTC, which is totally a different file type and can't import the proprietary Silhouette Studio files. Silhouette Studio will allow you to export their files as svg files, but only if you have an older version (v1.9 or v2.0) of.
- There are three ways to convert Studio files to SVG.
1. If you have purchased Silhouette Studio Designer Edition, and Silhouette Studio version 1.9 or 2.0, you can save the files as SVG, and import the SVG into programs that can use SVG files such as Popup Card Studio, ecraftshop Pro software or Make The Cut (MTC), etc. ready to cut. This is the easiest and most precise method.
2. If you do not have the Designer Edition of Silhouette Studio, you can follow the tutorial called VI.03_UsingMWSnapToCaptureScreenImages.pdf posted here http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/MTC_Tuts/files/06_File Conversion Techniques/
to capture the design lines, and Pixel trace them in MTC. This works best if you first fill the shapes with color in Silhouette Studio. You may lose some design detail using this method. MWSnap is a free software download. Select All (Ctrl+A) and export as SVG to use with programs that can use SVG files.
3. Pixel trace in MTC will be a bit better if you print from Silhouette Studio to PDF using the free Cute PDF Writer, and follow the tutorial called II.03_ImportingFilesToMTC.pdf starting on page 9, to import the Raster PDF file, and pixel trace that. That file is posted here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/MTC_Tuts/files/02_Basic Lessons
Select All (Ctrl+A) and export to SVG. Import the SVG file into software that supports SVG format.
Go to the Group's Home Page, http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/MTC_Tuts/files
Click on 06_File Conversion Techniques, and look for the files you need there. Right click on the file name, and select Save Link As or Save Target As. Once saved to your computer, double click on the file name to read or print it. If you get an error message, try again. Sometimes you will get an error message if there are lots of people trying to access the site at the same time.

It appears to create the file as a pdf for me, it looks like it is not writing it as a vector pdf file? So when I try to open it MTC I am getting nothing. Am I doing something wrong, aka user error? Or is this something that sil studio no longer allows? Anyone know?
I am pretty good at just filling and tracing most designs, but I thought cutepdf would be a great way to get the more complicated designs that have score lines into MTC. But I can't seem to get vector pdf's from sil studio even with basic shapes. - Silhouette Studio will not allow printing a vector PDF. So the resulting file will come in as a raster PDF in MTC. - Thanks Julie. I guess there is no easy way to trace score lines from sil studio into MTC.
If I find an old version of sil studio1.9 and buy the DE update will it still allow saving of svgs if I run two versions of sil studio on one laptop or has sil found a way to disable that from the older version? - When I am tracing designs, it is usually more efficient for me to redraw the lines in MTC. If you have lots of files to convert, then the 1.9+DE is the way to go. You can run two versions on the same computer if set up properly.Julie, [email protected] • My YouTube ChannelFree MTC Tutorials: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/MTC_Tuts/infoFree PCS Tutorials: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/pcs_tuts/infoPurchase: Popup Card Studio • Make The Cut! • Pazzles
You can do Save as a PDF from Silhouette Studio two different ways depending on the software version and upgrade you have.
What you want to do is create your design in Silhouette Studio as you normally would. Keep in mind you need to make sure that everything you want saved to the PDF is within the Print and Cut borders. Both can be turned on from the Page Set Up tool.
Anything outside those areas will not be saved as part of the PDF.
If you have Silhouette Studio V4 with Business Edition you can save as a PDF by going to File > Save As > Save to Hard Drive.
In the window that pops up, change the file 'Format' to Portable Document Format (PDF).
If you do not have Silhouette Studio Business Edition (or if you have not updated to Silhouette Studio V4), you'll need to use the Print tool to export a PDF from Silhouette Studio.
Click on the printer icon as if you are going to send your design to the printer. (Don't worry, you're not going to print.) On the pop up window, you'll see the little PDF button at the bottom left.
Click it and you'll get a drop down mention with the option to Save as PDF.
That's all there is to it. You can navigate to where your file saved and see that it's in PDF format and will open with Acrobat Reader.
